Information

Alfred Hager's Stone sculpture next to the Piaristenpark consists of worked serpentine that, with a length of 270cm, appears to hover – in places at a height of 35cm above the ground. Accordingly, the artist creates a dialectic of weight and the closed nature of the stone, and its dematerialisation at the same time.

The self-enclosed, block-like nature of the stone, with its fixed existence – perhaps that is what makes it so inviting for school pupils to use it as a seat – has something archaic about it, as if it reveals the ancient challenge that faces the artist working the material: wrestling with nature in the design process in order to finally give the stone a new form and significance.
