Information

After the failed attempt to have a fountain with landmark character designed by pupils and teachers, Waldfried Huber's proposal for a 4.8 metre tall steel composition on granite that forms a unity with the architectural setting was realised.

A fountain in the courtyard of the extended HTL in Waidhofen provided an occasion for representing the purpose and history of the school in as readable a manner as possible. Originally, the intention was to get the teachers and pupils to try to design it together, however this proved impossible to achieve. Eventually, my proposal was accepted for a rising steel composition, in unison with the architectural surroundings, to become the centre of the courtyard by compressing the sober horizontal-vertical gradations and giving them a dynamic course. Symbolic effect and the functional requirements of the fountain have clearly played a role in formulating the work, being a required obligation of the construction, yet have also had a stimulating effect on its composition.
