ursa major

Once upon a time, there was a knight who was surprised by a bear in the forest nearby. He swore to the bear that he would build a church if only the creature would spare his life. This was how the little village came to have a church already during the medieval period and rose in importance in the surrounding area.
The design by the artist duo Irena Eden and Stijn Lernout, which won the invitational competition for the square, is both a charming and dynamic solution that refers to the constellation Ursa Major (the Great Bear, of which the Big Dipper is a part). They transformed the constellation into specially developed light columns to create a space that is integrated in the overall structure of the public square, one which encourages people to sit and talk to one another. At the same time, the design of the distinct light columns is eye-catching, especially at night, thanks to the striking interplay and color of the lights.
The 16 lamps stand at various angles, reaching four to six meters in height and bending at the upper end. The light they emit casts cone patterns on the square that mark the individual points of the constellation. The color of the light is cool in contrast to the surrounding street lamps and corresponds to the wave length of the star light. The bases of three of the light columns are surrounded by circular wooden benches at their bases, while the others are wrapped in ring-shaped concrete blocks full of growing plants.
Irena Eden and Stijn Lernout work at the intersection of space, sculpture, and drawing. Their designed arrangements, which merge stage design with architecture, address the question of how spaces are created and how we perceive them. The everyday materials integrated in their works are thus reduced in form and placed in new aesthetic contexts.
