commemorative stone

The stone to honour St. Leopold has an austere block shape. The Carrara marble is adorned by three coats-of-arms arranged along the block, in a row in the middle. These are the coats-of-arms of the Papacy, the archdiocese of Vienna and the diocese of St. Pölten. The sides are lightly draped, showing the cloak motif as that of a protective function. The stone has been well polished to lend it a tactile form – a stone to touch. St. Leopold in the form of a block of marble is intended to symbolise the notion of a foundation stone for the regional capital. This significance is reinforced by the consecration of the stone on the occasion of the Pope's visit in 1988.
