Information

Entitled 'Doppelliege' (Double-sun bed), the object appears to be a purely utility item. However it is really an artwork that plays with the notion of the utility item. It consists of a single surface with a fold into which rolled metal sheeting has been set to create the impression of bodies.

With the implication of a double lounging chair Werner Skvara seems to have created an object with a real functional value. The material, however, deliberately calls into question its usability, as well as the clear tangibility of the lines. The lounging chair consists of an edged surface onto which rolled metal sheet was placed to evoke a corporeal impression. The geometric counter-shape is enhanced by abstraction, since it is more than a direct impression. The duplication that already appears in the title has a primarily formal meaning. There exists no hierarchy between the two bodies, and their equivalence is represented by precise uniformity in the width, height and depth of the impression. Real bodies would not leave such an identical impression. (…) The white lacquer that gives the metal sheet the appearance of porcelain is faintly reminiscent of a canvas but contributes first and foremost to the model-like aspect of the object.
