Brigitte Kowanz :
ANOTHER TIME ANOTHER PLACE

Baden, 2004 – 2019

Information

With its location on the forecourt of the train station in Baden the light object ANOTHER TIME ANOTHER PLACE alludes to the state of travelling as well as to shifts in time and location, departure or arrival. One part of the illuminated inscription is installed in reverse depending on where it is seen from.

Project dismantled in 2019 - Reconstruction planned

The light object ANOTHER TIME ANOTHER PLACE is part of a series of work with the same title where Brigitte Kowanz circumscribes options of space and time in a kind of sentence or code in order to address issues of experience and perception, of message and information. In contrast to other work in the series, this piece was made in situ. Its location on the forecourt of the station allows it to have a direct relationship to shifts in place and time, to departure, arrival and waiting. Viewers arriving at the station find themselves confronted with text designed so that the two letters 'a' draw a writing body bent at the midriff, with two hands left and right pulling a line of text from the middle. The right line corresponds to the time and the 'right' way round to read, the left one – "another place" – is seen as a mirror image, from the same perspective. Although seen from the other side of the object, the latter lettering would be the 'right' way round (and "another time" would be seen as a mirror image), although it is not about addressing issues of laterality, and the lettering in both cases is as perfectly set as a signature calculated to exude energy. Especially by night the object-like character of the piece recedes in favour of language and light, during the daytime the lettering forms both an image and a sculptural object.
