Information

"Aus der Wand treten" (Step Out of the Wall) is the title of the large-scale panels with reliefs on the walls of the entrance area and on two floors. Photographs of various interiors have been translated from the realm of the two-dimensional into a three-dimensional relief structure milled into blue plastic panels.

On entering the Eggenburg psychosomatic centre (PSZ) one finds oneself in a kind of lobby situation. White leather armchairs invite individual visitors to sit but not to linger. Set slightly towards the rear is a reception area, while corridors and stairwells lead away on all sides. Patients, visitors, staff — there is a continual bustle back and forth. There is a space between the inside and the outdoors, between secluded and public space. The wellbeing of the people here, who are being treated for traumatic experiences, eating disorders etc., is key during this time of intensive therapy. Although it is also clear that people only live there temporarily.
The work by Bernhard Cella juts out in this physical and emotional in-between space. Scenarios from real hotel lobbies, a bar with standing room, a room with a fireplace and a sprawling staircase are placed generously in front of the wall in the entrance area and on the next two storeys. For this he translated two photographs into a structured relief that was then milled into blue plastic panels in an elaborate process. Structures present themselves to the viewers as if they had been eroded, animated by a play of shadow-valleys and pinnacles of light. Personal horizons of experience are also exposed, and atmospheres are created by worlds of memory.
